CURRENT WORK- A BRIEF BACKGROUND
Over the last year or so David has been working on a new body of work. Starting with an extensive period of drawing, David has now moved into oils and is putting together another short film. After repeated visits to the High country around Falls Creek, this terrain and landscape has provided the inspiration for this new work. Using natural features found in the Australian Alps, such as basalt rock formations, high plains meadows, and wildflowers, the artist places his figures amongst them. Often using his fellow artists and family as models, he strives to create a poetic, romantic scenario, with graceful figures and a timeless utopian feel. Closer scrutiny reveals the artist weaving a narrative journey of diaristic and dream-like detail around the painting surface.
This work continues long running themes, of people located in a particular landscape, in space and time, culled from many sources, including sketchbooks, old magazines and rock music. Elements start to reappear in sequences; the hexagon, the mountain mystic in black fur, the isolated colonial woman and flowers, with all their symbolic potency.
Inspired by everlasting daisies, Led Zeppelin and Hansel and Gretel, amongst many other things, this work is informed by painters as diverse as Di Paulo, Tanguy and Terry Winters. |
