D.H. Thomas Biography

David Hugh Thomas has been a practising artist for over 25 years. He makes paintings and drawings, prints, installation, and the occasional photo and film-based work. David has exhibited his work at venues such as Heide Museum of Modern Art, Monash University, Australian Centre for Contemporary Art, as well as artist –run spaces such as Westspace, and commercial galleries, like William Mora’s, amongst others. His most recent show was at Gasworks Park in March this year.

In the 1990’s he lived in New York City for 5 years where he exhibited many times, including a solo exhibition at the Australian Consulate, and venues in Soho like the Andre Zarre Gallery.

David also curates exhibitions, an example being “Geometer” which showed at Brightspace, Melbourne, 2003 and then travelled to the Monash University Faculty of Art and Design Gallery in Gippsland. In 2007 he curated “Dedicated Follower of Fashion” at the Carlton Hotel and Studios in Melbourne.

David facilitates the annual Falls Creek Artist Camp, which brings together a wide ranging group of artists to Falls Creek in March each year for art making , tramping across the high plains, late night conversation and relaxing in the spa! A kind of social experiment, the event is followed by an exhibition at Falls Creek which runs through the ski season. An exhibition is also planned for Melbourne next year.

D.H.Thomas has worked at the Monash University Museum of Art for many years where he helps manage the collection.
